![]() ![]() In fact, the evolution of K-Pop and K-Drama in the Philippines has now reached the online realm where a throng of Filipino fan bases are devoted to specific Korean artists or drama. Despite having our very own “teleseryes” or TV series, dramas and anthologies, Filipinos can’t help but fall in love with K-Dramas and K-Pop music. Whether they are dubbed in Tagalog or watched with English subtitles, Filipinos are enraptured with Chinese and Korean superstars who have good looks and undeniable charisma. ![]() ![]() From then on, the Asianovela craze grew in popularity and even more so with the introduction of Korean dramas to Philippine TV. During the same year, the rise of Hallyu or Korean Wave also took the country by storm. Hence, “Asianovelas” or Asian soap operas was introduced, starting with the hit Taiwanese drama series, “Meteor Garden” that aired in May 2003. Popular Mexican telenovelas “Marimar” and “Betty La Fea” (among many others) were groundbreaking while Mexican actress Thalia aka Marimar and Venezuelan actor Fernando Carrillo aka Fernando Jose of the hit drama series, “Rosalinda,” captivated the hearts of many Filipinos.īut it wasn’t until 2003 that Philippine television saw a significant change of focus to series and shows from countries closer to home such as Taiwan and South Korea. “Telenovelas” or soap operas became a massive hit in the country during the ‘90s when huge entertainment networks introduced foreign TV dramas that are dubbed into Tagalog. ![]()
